Classes got underway at the University of Kentucky Monday with the biggest freshman class at over 6000 students. UK Spokesman Jay Blanton says final figures aren’t in yet, but the university’s overall enrollment may also be the highest ever. Blanton says there’s a need to grow enrollment and graduations.

“We believe it’s really important to educate and graduate more students. We think that’s what the workforce of the state needs is to grow. If you look at the growth in the economy of our state right now thanks to the efforts of lots of people, there remains a real need for skilled workers,” said Blanton.

Regarding COVID policies, Blanton said the use of masks is optional in any university setting, except healthcare facilities. He noted a major push continues for increasing vaccinations. Last year, the UK spokesman said more than 90% of the campus community was vaccinated.
