Because school is out during the summer, some children may be eating less. The Madison County Public Library in Richmond is looking to help. This week the library held a program known as the “Lunch Bunch.”
David Payne is the youth services manager for the library. He said there is a need for a program like this in the area.
“Most children in Madison County qualify for free or reduced lunch so over the summertime, when they’re struggling to find food, we’re happy to be a feeding site for that,” Payne said.
“There’s a lot of food insecurity in Madison County and we just love being a food site where kids know they can come to the library in the summertime to get food.”
Payne said they have partnered with Berea Kids Eat, which operates sites in Berea and now this one in Richmond. Lunch usually consists of a main course, milk, fruits, vegetables and some kind of snack.
Anyone aged 18 and under is eligible to participate. The library hosts the Lunch Bunch on weekdays from noon until 1PM, sometimes 2PM.
