Destruction of GB nerve agent rockets stored at the Blue Grass Army Depot is underway. This marks the beginning of the last of five separate disposal campaigns at the Madison County installation.
The first GB rocket containing the sarin agent was destroyed Wednesday at the Blue Grass Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant. These rockets represent more than 50% of the original chemical munition stockpile at the depot.
Disposal operations near Richmond have been completed for GB projectiles and VX nerve agent projectiles and rockets plus mustard-filled projectiles. Neutralization of chemical weapons at Blue Grass began in June of 2019.
More than 246 tons of chemical agent have been destroyed with over 276 tons remaining. All munitions are scheduled to be destroyed by the end of 2023.
