An athletics-focused capital fundraising campaign at Eastern Kentucky University is in the works. Plans call for a fall launch to benefit EKU sports.

This fundraising effort is scheduled to fit in between the end of the campus-wide capital campaign “Make No Little Plans” and the anticipated start of another campaign in a couple of years. EKU Athletics Director Matt Roan.

“Being able to continually improve facilities is something that certainly helps recruit student-athletes. It helps retain student-athletes in this era of the portal and NIL, everything that’s happening there,” said Roan.

Student-athletes are moving from one school to another under the transfer portal and some are being compensated for their name, image, and likeness.

Roan said there are also implications for athletic scholarships.

“It’s a pet campaign dedicated to trying to raise capital for investments of facilities. To grow our scholarship endowment. To provide more and better opportunities for our student-athletes and to relieve the scholarship burden from the institution towards athletics and then be able to operate as best we can,” said Roan.

Early on, Roan said the facility improvements could be seen in Alumni Coliseum, soccer, and golf practice facilities. The AD noted addressing needs at the Begley Building and Roy Kidd Stadium for football is a high priority.
