Fayette County hits grim milestone: 100,000 coronavirus cases

Stu Johnson

Fayette County has recorded its 100,000th case of coronavirus. The first case occurred in March of 2020 and the 50,000th case of COVID came last October. Fayette County Health Department Spokesman Kevin Hall said this is an indication that the COVID-19 pandemic is by no means over. He noted the Fayette County count doesn’t consider all the home test results. Hall added it’s not practical to try to record cases from store-bought tests in the health department data.

“We’ve had people who have called us or messaged us to say they tested positive at home but we can’t do anything with that unless it’s a test from one of the labs that has been approved and is part of the official count,” said Hall.

Hall said the per-day tally of recorded COVID cases has been averaging just under 150. That figure was about 90 a day a month ago. Hall said for those people who contract the virus, it remains important to isolate to prevent the spread of the illness.

Central Kentucky is experiencing a sizeable heat wave this week. Many people will be seeking indoor shelter from high-90 readings. Hall said masking indoors is still suggested.

“Right now because Fayette County is being shown in the red on the state maps, it is recommended that anyone in a public indoor area, wears a mask. Now, this is not a requirement, but it is encouraged for people to do that,” said Hall.

Hall suggests taking the steps now to protect yourself and others and avoid potentially spreading this with numbers growing. The health department official added there remains a need to see more vaccinations and boosters being administered.
