Officials with the Fayette County Health Department are reporting the first flu-related death of the current influenza season. Many more flu cases are occurring this year, compared to last.

The flu-related Lexington death occurred in an individual in their 60s with underlying conditions. Fayette County Health Department Spokesman Kevin Hall said there have been 172 lab-confirmed cases, up 15 from last week.

In the midst of COVID activity last year with fewer large gatherings and mask-wearing, Hall said there were very few cases. But during the previous year, Lexington saw 742 lab-confirmed cases and three deaths.

Hall noted about 13 hundred flu shots have been administered this year at the health department, in line with last year. And flu shots are still available Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at the clinic.
