The student paper “Eastern Progress” is celebrating 100 years at Eastern Kentucky University. The first edition of the paper went out in February of 1922. Tricia Fulks Kelley is the faculty advisor for Eastern Progress. She said the outfit has undergone quite a bit of change.

“We’re not as much a newspaper anymore, more or less a media outlet, a publishing house of sorts.”

It has expanded into online and podcasting content. She said working there gives students great hands-on experience.

“Those kind of dedicated editors across various sections, working on the podcasts and video platforms, copy editors, our photographers and graphics designers, that is anywhere between eight and 16 individuals.”

Fulks Kelley said the pandemic played a major role in the changes at the paper. It used to print weekly before more of an online daily source of information. A centennial celebration is being planned for the week of homecoming.
