Some changes are on the way for the Lexington police disciplinary review board. The city is accepting application for two civilians to join. Lexington mayor Linda Gorton announced the opening of the two positions earlier this week. She said the board considers substantiated complaints against officers in special circumstances.
“They’re usually cases where either the chief has declined to propose a sanction or where an officer has rejected what the police recommended for discipline.”
Gorton said adding non-police officers will add fresh eyes and ears on the board.
“I think that this perspective of having civilians who are not police officers will be a good addition to the whole process. They’ll come from different walks of life with difference experiences and perspectives.”
She added that the board has been made up mostly command staff and at least one Fraternal Order of Police officer. Over 40 applications have already been submitted to join.
