Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton has firsthand experience when it comes to military service. She served as an Army nurse, her husband’s a retired major general, and her son and son-in-law are both active-duty officers. During Thursday’s Veteran’s Day ceremony, Gorton spoke of her son serving in the old guard and being a part of the Presidential Salute Battery at Arlington Cemetery. “As a member of the old guard he was also called to perform search and rescue at the Pentagon immediately following the 9-11 attacks. He was 20 years old at that time,” said Gorton.
Sixth District Congressman Andy Barr spoke about those who served in Afghanistan. He said there are veterans of that war, now private civilians, who are helping to extract Afghanis who aided the United States. The program at Veterans Park included a recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, plus special music from a chorus at Veterans Park Elementary.
The ceremony also offered an opportunity to recognize a “Never Forget” garden sponsored by Lexington DAR Chapters and the Lafayette Chapter of the SAR.
