A military roll call at Eastern Kentucky University Thursday found volunteers reading names of 7041 men and women lost during the global war on terror. That included the 13 who died at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan.
EKU Student Veteran Association President Alex Weldon’s brother-in-law Ryan Knauss died in the terrorist attack. “Next to the gate is a stream and we were told that so many people were trying to get into the airport that they started overflowing into the stream and were trying to crawl out. And so, he stepped off the side and was pulling Afghani citizens out of the stream to get them to the airport to try to save their life. That was Ryan,” said Weldon.
Weldon said Knauss was army through and through, adding if cut, he would bleed green.
Weldon was given a paver honoring his brother-in-law. It will be placed in the EKU Veteran’s Memorial. Barbara Kent with Eastern's Office of Military and Veterans Affairs says the national roll call was established by retired Army Lieutenant Colonel and former EKU staff member Brett Morris.
