The Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team opens up its season with a new hometown coach. Greg Todd is beginning his 30th year of coaching. He’s a Madison County native and an EKU alumnus. Todd said a new three-point line may take some getting used to this season. “All of women’s basketball this year you will see a three-point percentage that’s down from last year, cause we’ve moved to the men’s line. That extra distance is going to definitely make a difference,” said Todd.
Coach Todd said his Colonel team is experienced and has the most depth of any team he’s ever coached. EKU will take on Transylvania Thursday at six o clock in Alumni-McBrayer Arena. Todd will be coaching against a team he led for eight years.
Seniors I’liyah Green and Jayla Johnson say coach Todd’s demeanor is striking. “He gets his point across without having to do too much or, whenever he does need to, he does. It’s actually pretty cool the way he coaches,” said Green.
“But when he hit that 'woa, woa, woa', he got everybody attention when he hit that 'woa, woa, woa'. Cause that’s the loudest thing that come out of his mouth the whole practice. Like it’s crazy,” added Johnson.
Senior Bria Bass said she’d never had someone so soft spoken, yet aggressive and demanding at the same time. For his part, Todd said it’s a game to him, not life or death. He said working with young people has never been a job in his role as a coach.
