It’s a much-anticipated basketball season at Eastern Kentucky University. Coming off a successful 22-7 record last year, the Colonels begin a new campaign this week at home against Georgetown College. Fourth-year Head Coach A.W. Hamilton said the transfer portal impact will be evident. “We’re gonna look a lot older. Our average age is 23. So, if you look at where the season ended last year, we’d be top 25 in age. So, we’re an older group, we’re an experienced group,” said Hamilton.
That includes players from schools like Marshall, North Carolina State, and Wichita State. One of the returners, Michael Morena, from Scott County, said new Colonels are not going to be shell-shocked.
“Every single guy has been in a big moment, so it’s confidence within them, that they’re not going to shy away from it,” said Morena.
Another returner at EKU is another Scott County native, Cooper Rob, who’s looking for big crowds like he experienced during high school competition in McBrayer Arena. “Having fans in here is a different atmosphere, so I think that’s the part I’m most excited for. Especially having these new guys play in front of these fans,” explained Rob.
EKU’s game with Georgetown tips at 7:00 Tuesday. Eastern is back at home Thursday for a contest against Ohio Valley.
