UK police investigating two separate strangulations on campus

Stu Johnson

University of Kentucky police are investigating two separate strangulations on campus over a two-day period. In both cases, the suspect was known to the victim. The incidents occurred early Sunday and Tuesday in dormitories, both with different male perpetrators. UK Police Chief Joe Monroe said it’s unusual to see this type of incident over such a short time- period. “We’re trying to find out what is the underlying cause that we’ve got two of these reports when we haven’t had hardly any in years. One of the things is that we looked at the KRS changed and now strangulation is its own charge, instead of an assault. So, that is a possibility as well,” said Monroe

Monroe said poor coping during an isolation period of COVID could also be a factor.

Monroe noted there were no significant physical injuries to the female survivors. The police chief added the cases will be presented to prosecutors for criminal charges.
