Rental assistance distribution goes from government to well-known social service agency

Stu Johnson

The processing of COVID-related rental assistance requests and distribution of payments in Lexington is now being undertaken by the Community Action Council. The social service agency has long been involved in providing assistance in many areas for decades. Community Action Director Sharon Price said the process for applying is not changing. “We tried to make the transition as seamless as possible. So, I don’t want that a lot is going to be changing or the rules are changing. They’re not. We are ready and stand ready to help everyone,” said Price.

Price said her aggressive goal is to see $500,000 go out the door each week. Director of Community Services Leidy Borges Gonzalez noted that’s doable. “It’s achievable because we have more staff in place and we, basically, have a process where we actually receive the applications. Once we complete the application and the landlords complete the applications, we’re able to turn it around in a really fast, like, basically cut the check, and it will be in the landlords’ hands,” said Gonzalez.

Lexington Grants and Special Programs Director Charlie Lanter said the transition allows government employees who were pulled into processing to return to their primary role. Federal, state, and local support of rental assistance in Lexington tallies just over $30 million. Of that amount, $11 million in rental and utility assistance payments have been distributed.
