More than a decade in the planning and making, the ribbon has been cut on Lexington’s Brighton Rail Trail Bridge over Man O’ War Boulevard. The 300-foot bridge connects Liberty Trail with Brighton Rail Trail. City Engineer Doug Burton said it’s just one piece of the puzzle. “We’re super busy. $53 million of trail projects alone and the goal is to connect all of Lexington, not just a couple neighborhoods,” said Burton.
Burton admitted the full connection of trails around Lexington will take some time and funding. Council Member David Kloiber said he’s out on the trail routinely and said the opening has been highly anticipated in the community. “For us to be able to walk from our houses onto these trails to neighboring parks to neighboring communities, it connects us in a way that normally is just unheard of,” explained Kloiber.
More than 40,000 people use Liberty Park, Brighton Rail, and the Gleneagles trails each year.
