Infrastructure work associated with a second Amazon facility in Lexington continues to impact the city’s best-known multi-use trail. City officials hope to see the entire trail open to walkers, runners, and cyclists by early October.
Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton says the city is working to reopen the Legacy Trail as soon as possible. But she admits the October date is later than originally projected.
Work on the entrance and exit from the new Amazon last mile delivery station on Newtown Pike closed a section of the trail in mid-July. Now, utilities have the trail closed to finish their connections. Riders can still use portions on either side of the closure. To keep cyclists safe, a section of the trail is being relocated where it crosses the Amazon property.
The Legacy trail will be closed again this winter to allow for completion of city sewer work. Mayor Gorton said the trail will be entirely open for a period of time this fall instead of extending the closure for the sewer improvements.
