Hundreds Of Workers Onsite At Blue Grass Airport For Runway Repaving

Stu Johnson

Lots of construction workers will spend a great deal of time this weekend at Blue Grass Airport. Crews will be working to resurface the 7000-foot main runway at the central Kentucky airport. It closed to air traffic at 6:00 p.m. Thursday and is expected to re-open at 6:00 Sunday evening. Blue Grass Spokeswoman Amy Caudill said it’s quite a job to fit all the construction pieces together.

“We actually have very detailed plans on which companies do which portion of the runway. They all have certain lanes that they focus on. So, there was a very detailed process that is in place. Everyone knows exactly which gates they’re using to enter the runway and who is doing what at what time,” said Caudill.

Caudill admits lightning or heavy rains could impact the timing of pavement work, but those potential delays were built into the schedule. The Federal Aviation Administration is providing the funding for the $16 million project. The last time the runway was re-paved was 15 years ago.

Caudill said the shorter general aviation runway will also be closed. The repaving project takes a lot of coordination and Caudill added virtually every asphalt resource in the state has been tapped.
