The Madison County Fair and Horse Show first took place in 1943 with just the horse show title. The 2021 version returns this weekend after being canceled a year ago due to coronavirus concerns. Also back is the greased pig event.
Madison County Extension Agent Brandon Sears believes dawn detergent has replaced Crisco as the pig lubricant. “Several times people have it or think they do and they just slip loose. So, it’s a lot of fun. People really enjoy it. It’s something different. I think pretty synonymous with county fairs,” said Sears.
Sears said the number of exhibits is down for this summer’s fair. He’s not sure how much of that might be related to pandemic issues. The county agent says health guidelines in place will be followed during the weeklong fair. Sears noted an uptick in coronavirus cases could lead to new mandates and how the county fair is run.
