Lexington City Council To Get Neighborhoods In Transition Report

Stu Johnson

Lexington’s City Council is scheduled to hear a report Tuesday from the Task Force on Neighborhoods in Transition.  The extensive report includes recommendations related to gentrification.

The report starts out by stating the group was tasked with identifying ways to protect vulnerable residents from the consequences of neighborhood redevelopment, especially displacement, with an emphasis on preserving the history and culture of communities.  The task force held 23 meetings and two public forums.

A number of recommendations are forthcoming such as modifying existing programs, policies, and procedures.  Others include encouraging local banks to invest and intentionally communicate with residents and businesses about available resources, increase funding for affordable housing and the housing rehab program.  Recommendations are expected to be taken up by Council committees.
