Lexington Unveils Updated Rainbow Crosswalks As Part Of Pride Month Celebration

Stu Johnson

Rainbow colors once again shine brightly at a downtown Lexington intersection.  Monday’s event celebrated Pride Month. “Lexington has a strong tradition of embracing fairness and celebrating diversity,” said Mayor Linda Gorton in her opening remarks for the ribbon-cutting for the updated rainbow crosswalks.  The crosswalks are located where North Limestone and Short Street meet.

Tuesday Meadows is the past chair of Lexington Fairness. “Symbolism matters.  It really does in our world so physically we need to remind us that this is a really great town,” said Meadows.

Third District Council Member Hannah LeGris said there’s commitment along with awareness demonstrated through the rainbow colors.   “We have the responsibility to value and invest in the diversity of our city to ensure a future where all members of our community will thrive,” LeGris explained.

Lexington scored a 95 last year on the Human Rights Campaign survey of city policies related to LGBTQ acceptance.  Community Outreach Liaison Craig Cammack is looking for a perfect score this fall. “We're hoping for a hundred.  I feel confident.  I will say that.  I feel confident we’ll reach our goal,” said Cammack.

Mayor Gorton said she’s been committed to promoting fairness and working to secure a safe supportive community for LGBTQ residents and visitors.

In a fundraising effort, nearly 30 individual donors, including commercial and civic groups, provided support for crosswalks.  Lexington’s Pride Festival is scheduled in September.
