Surprises Found During Construction Of Lexington's Town Branch Commons Trail

lexingtonky.gov

Construction continues through the heart of downtown Lexington on the city’s multi-use trail project.  Director of Project Management Brandi Peacher provided an update to Council last week on the Town Branch Commons Trail. She said work has proceeded throughout the pandemic.

Peacher noted stonework bordering the trail ties into the bluegrass scene. “As you remember the Town Branch Commons’ design aims to take a little bit of our bluegrass rural feel and bring that into downtown Lexington and the Limestone stonework is a big component of that,” said Peacher.

Peacher admitted challenges have included downtown utility coordination, archaeological findings, and an overlapping of the Town Branch Commons and Lexington Center renovation projects.  She said crews digging quickly found a concrete culvert for the Town Branch creek.  “Behind the building is where the Town Branch culvert appeared.  As I mentioned earlier, one of our challenges.  We knew the culvert was underground.  We did not know that it was one inch below the drive-able surface.  So, that was much more shallow than we anticipated,” explained Peacher.

When completed by the end of next year, the downtown portion of the trail is expected to have two or three water features.
