Work continues in downtown Lexington on the almost $40 million Town Branch Commons Trail Project. Pedestrian safety devices are being installed this week.
A large section of Vine Street now features wide pavement and angled stone slab sides. This week finds long black poles jutting out across Vine in a couple of spots for new traffic lights. Trail Project Manager Brandi Peacher said one is at the transit center. “That was the longest stretch in downtown that did not have a stop. So, you were going from Limestone all the way to Quality. And while a driver might like that because it’s fast, a pedestrian it makes for a scary situation as you’re trying to cross that street in a safe manner,” said Peacher.
As to those who worry about increased traffic congestion, Peacher noted it may add seconds to the drive, but motorists would likely be stopped at the next light. She said cyclists and walkers will appreciate the addition.
The other new traffic light is found at a site that used to feature a pedway from the Square to the Lexington Center
Plans call for the Town Branch Commons Trail Project, which includes work currently underway on Midland Avenue, to be completed by the end of 2022.
