Lexington city council members have been briefed on planning for spring and summer parks and recreation activities. The information came with a caveat Tuesday.
Acting General Services Commissioner Monica Conrad began her remarks by saying ‘subject to change’ remains a term in play when it comes to recreation and events. She said coronavirus guidelines will continue to drive decision making. With that said plans call for public pools at Castlewood, Southland, Tates Creek, and Woodland to open May 29th. “We anticipate structured sessions throughout the day that people would pre-register for and that unfilled spots could be made available to those folks who are walking up. That may completely change,” said Conrad.
Conrad noted that registration approach could change with more vaccinations.
Coronavirus caused great changes in 2020 including many cancelations of events and much modification in certain recreational activities. But, it also led a large resurgence in golf on Lexington’s public courses. Conrad said the city will play host to the 45th Boys’ PGA Championship. “You’ll remember in 2018 we had the Girls PGA Championship at Kearny Hills Golf Links and we’ll be hosting the boys this July. So, we are going to need volunteers. We’ll be putting out that call continually as we approach July and really look forward to hosting that event again,” explained Conrad.
The parks and recreation director outlined a number of events including Big Band and Jazz, the Southland Jamboree, and Friday Flicks. Mid- summer brings the Fourth of July Festival with a virtual 10K race for a second time.
