Early Voting Underway in Lexington

Stu Johnson

2020 General Election voting is underway in Kentucky.  In Fayette County, in-person and drop box voting began Tuesday.

At Beaumont Library, David Laughmiller opted to vote the traditional way instead of mail-in or drop box options. “Oh, I don’t trust the mail.  I have problems with the U.S. Postal Service all the time, so I just live around, it’s just as easy to come over here and do it in-person,” said Laughmiller.

A large blue drop box was positioned in the library parking lot.  George Neel dropped his and his wife’s ballots in the container.  Neel said he and his wife preferred voting at home and staying away from people.

“Also wanted to give the post office a little bit of a break and not send it through the mail, cause I know how inundated they’ll be and we thought this was the most efficient way to do it,” explained Neel.

Erica Formisano cast her ballot at the Beaumont Library Branch.  “Cause I wanted to be 100% sure I could see the full process that my vote registered.  I didn’t have to rely on a drop box or mail.  I just really like the in-person part,” said Formisano.

For the first time, Fayette County voters are filling out a paper ballot and placing it in an automatic reader.  Formisano said the machine still displayed, ‘your vote has been registered.’  She says that’s why she chose to vote in person and not mail in a ballot.?

Larry Landrum also voted in person.  He said he didn’t want to go about getting a ballot, so he chose to cast his vote as he has for years.  There are eight voting locations and six drop boxes around Lexington.
