Lexington city officials say about 65 restaurants and bars have expanded outdoor seating since May in an attempt to manage operations during the coronavirus pandemic.
More outside dining came with Mayor Linda Gorton’s announcement this past spring allowing seating expansion on sidewalks, parking lots, and closed streets.
Mayor Gorton said the goal of the outdoor seating program is to protect restaurants while also making sure patrons and workers are safe. Restaurants are still operating at 50% capacity. The mayor and council suspended code, permit, and fee requirements to allow restaurants and retailers to grow their outdoor footprint. Eateries must clearly define seating boundaries. In addition to social distancing, there must be enough room for those with disabilities to pass by. Lexington Director of Project Management Brandi Peacher said, as fall turns toward winter, the city will work with restaurants and bars to see about creative ways to remain open outdoors which may include the use of tents and heaters.?
