Work Begins On Rail Trail Bridge In Northeast Lexington

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton and Sixth District Council Member Lisa Higgins-Hord Wednesday announced the startup of construction on the Brighton Rail Trail Bridge.  It’s been more than a decade of effort to secure funding.

The 280 foot bridge, expected to be completed next summer, will connect rail trails east and west of Man O’ War Boulevard.  Once complete, the shared use trail will stretch four and a half miles through Liberty Park, Hamburg, and Andover Forest neighborhoods.

Higgins-Hord said the new bridge will, quote, “elevate the quality of life for all of those who choose to use the trail’s connectivity to access park amenities, shopping, and increased pedestrian walkability.”  More than 40,000 people use Liberty Park, Brighton Rail, and the Gleneagles Trails annually.

The driving factors for constructing the federally funded $2.8 million bridge have been safety and connectivity.?
