Coronavirus Forcing Lexington Police To Adjust Response To Calls

kyforward.com

A representative with the Lexington Police Department says coronavirus has impacted how some officers do their job.

Public Information Officer Brenna Angel said there’s been increased use of phones for taking reports.  She cited theft crimes as one example.  But, Angel adds taking reports by phone only pertains to certain crimes. “So being in a first responder role, there are going to be emergency situations where that’s not always possible so, when those situations do arise where we have to make contact in person, we’re going to try and be as cautious and prepared as possible to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” said Angel.

Angel said officers, with personal protective equipment, are responding in person to violent crimes.

In reviewing police data for 2020, Angel said through June, part one crimes, the most serious, were down 9% compared to a year ago.  She added crime has gone done each year for the last five years.  Most recently, Lexington has seen a number of homicides, 25 so far in 2020.
