Lexington citizens are being invited to comment on more than 50 different transportation related projects. As part of a federal funding requirement, the bluegrass community is part of a metropolitan planning organization.
Senior Transportation Planner Stuart Kearns says this process is not about applying for federal support for the transportation improvement program. “The money is there. It’s more an opportunity to comment on the different projects. In some cases, especially if it’s a project that’s early on in the design changes, you’re probably going to be able to affect more of a change than a project that’s maybe slated for construction fiscal year 21 or 22,” said Kearns.
Kearns says the transportation improvement program or TIP includes projects totaling about $265 million coming from federal, state, and local sources. He says the TIP period runs from 2021 to 2024. The TIP also includes safety and congestion projects along Richmond Road, funding for public transit, and safety improvement to the Wilmore “Y” intersection of Kentucky 29 and U.S. 68. Public comment will be accepted until August 15th and can be made through the MPO website located on the Lexington government website.
