Lexington Council Announces Plan Of Action On Racial Justice Matters

Stu Johnson

Members of Lexington’s city council outlined plans Monday to review and take action on racial justice issues.  A special Planning and Public Safety Committee meeting Tuesday is expected to include examining statutory authority, collective bargaining items, no-knock warrants, and the regulation of use of police force.

Council Member Angela Evans said the review could result in a new law, but it’s too early to say. “A lot of things that have happened in other cities are clearly stated, are not allowed by our Lexington Police Department, but does that mean they are always followed, we don’t know,” said Evans.

Neither Evans nor Vice Mayor Steve Kay indicated the council believes the mayor is moving too slowly on the matter.  Evans says it would likely take state legislative action before many local policing reforms could be implemented.  Also planned is an online meeting where community comments would be sought.
