Third Night Of Protesting In Downtown Lexington

Hundreds of protesters gathered in downtown Lexington Sunday night to express concerns about well-publicized cases where African Americans died during interactions with police.  It was the third straight night of people making their voices heard.

Protesters through chanting and signs referenced the deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville.

Stephanie Theakston said she was not downtown to specifically protest police, but to honor the beauty of black lives.

“I work with a lot of police officers to combat domestic violence, so I really rely on their allyship, but absolutely we have to take a stand against the bad actors and really support black lives,” said Theakston.

The crowd of protesters gathered in Main Street in front of the police department, blocking traffic for about 15 minutes.  Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said that didn’t create a major problem.

“I minor inconvenience for those motorists.  If that’s what people need to help get their point across, especially for situations like this, I think that’s a minor inconvenience for people,” explained Weathers.

Weathers said he feels good about his department. He added, quote, “just like everything else you got some people who aren’t up to par and when we find them we try to deal with them the best we can.”
