Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton says the city is still waiting on specific guidance on requesting federal funds to help the government deal with financial issues related to coronavirus. The governor announced Wednesday that local governments can find information about applying for a portion of the $300 on Thursday.
The mayor met with council members remotely Wednesday for a COVID-19 update. Gorton said a meeting with healthcare stakeholders brought good news regarding personal protective equipment use and caseloads. “Their PPE needs are pretty much met right now, all the healthcare stakeholders. And they also each reported that their cases are becoming lighter and lighter. So, this is great news,” said Gorton.
A Lexington council member meanwhile is asking for more information about state guidelines which currently keep the governing body from meeting in person. Council Member Jennifer Reynolds said she wondered why churches could meet, but not a city council.
“Why faith communities can meet with more than ten people but legislative bodies that are trying to pass a budget during a really difficult time are not. That to me is inconsistent,” said Reynolds.
Reynolds said she had been in communications with the governor’s office about meeting standards. Mayor Gorton said she had been told by the governor the group of ten or less restriction included governing bodies. That number is expected to increase to 50 in July.
During the virtual session, Gorton said there had been, quote, “unbelievable leadership” in all of the city divisions and departments during the coronavirus period.?
