Lexington Council Holds First Ever Virtual Work Session

Stu Johnson

Lexington’s city council was called into session Tuesday afternoon in historical fashion.

“Alright, it’s three o clock on Tuesday, April the 21st 2020. And this is the first ever zoom county council meeting.  Welcome”

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton and 15 other council members held a virtual work session.  After taking action on agenda items, the conversation turned to the current state of coronavirus.  Council Member Bill Farmer urged Gorton to include them in discussions with the business community when talking about easing restrictions.  “We got to broaden our scope here a little bit and provide that the council be part of these conversations and decisions and I know that you will do that.  We just need to tweak it going forward is my thought,” said Farmer.

“I appreciate that very much and council will be right in the middle of this,” responded Gorton.

“Perfect,” said Farmer.

Gorton’s Chief of Staff Tyler Scott said there’s a need to triple COVID 19 testing in a given day before a major return to business can occur.

The mayor told council she had communicated with the entire Kentucky congressional delegation about federal stimulus money.  Gorton said the response was to reaffirm that there are no direct appropriations for cities under 500,000 in population.
