Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton has appointed University of Kentucky Public Health Professor Mark Swanson to the third district council seat. Swanson, who’s worked to improve access to healthy foods downtown, will fulfill the unexpected term of Jake Gibbs who died suddenly on March third.
In making the announcement, Gorton said Swanson arrives on the council during a time of uncertainty.
“Mark we’re so happy to have you hear today and you are certainly starting on the council under some of the most challenging conditions any of us have ever experienced,” said Gorton.
Gorton added, quote, “We will get through this, neighbor helping neighbor.” Swanson thanked the mayor for what he called the trust and confidence she’s shown in him with the appointment.
During his comments Monday, Swanson thanked Gibbs, a friend for 20 years, for serving the city with, quote, “such integrity and compassion.”
Swanson understands he comes on council at a unique time. “Assuming this office at such a critical and challenging time in the history of our city, our nation, and our world is not going to be easy. The Urban County Council will be forced to make many difficult decisions in the months to come to make sure that we meet the basic needs of all of our citizens in as equitable and forward thinking way as possible.”
Swanson will be sworn into office after a 15-day waiting period to allow Councilmembers to meet Swanson.
