Lexington city planners are launching a study of what many in the bluegrass community may consider one of the busiest thoroughfares.
The “Imagine Nicholasville Road” study seeks to respond to development while also exploring solutions to traffic congestion along the arterial. Kenzie Gleason is an administrative officer with the city planning department.
“We really want to see what steps we need to take to try to encourage people to hop on a bus as opposed to driving up and down the corridor. We’ll be exploring a transit service model called bus rapid transit,” said Gleason.
Gleason said it could have the feel of a light rail system, except using buses. She added the study will also examine the possibility of mixed use development with retail and housing. “Given the number of people who also work at all the retail establishments and so forth and a question is with they be willing or would they be interested in living within walking distance to their jobs and the different services they need every day, the dry cleaner, the bank, so forth, if there were more affordable housing options that were nearby,” explained Gleason.
A March fourth open house meeting to share project information and gather feedback is scheduled at 6:00 in the Community Room at Lexington Green. Gleason says an online survey will also run from the end of February through the end of March. Study findings are expected the end of this year.
