The changing markets for recyclables, both domestically and globally, is causing cities like Lexington to adjust their government based strategies.
Long term improvements at Lexington’s recycling center is expected to bring with it more convenience for residents.
Last spring, Lexington suspended door to door collection of paper. Most recently, a number of large drop off bins were positioned around the bluegrass community. Lexington Environmental Quality and Public Works Commissioner Nancy Albright said the aim over the next few years is to uprade equipment with an eye toward resuming curbside collection of paper. “That machinery will be installed first, but we want to make sure that it makes sense with some of the other materials that may come on line later as we look to what other opportunities are out there,” noted Albright.
Albright said recycling items like milk cartons and additional types of plastics could be offered in the future. For now, seven bright yellow bins are in place to receive loose paper.
