Lexington’s mass transit system is kicking off Black History Month by reserving a seat on each of its buses this week in honor of civil rights activist Rosa Parks. In December, 1955, Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery Alabama.
In addition to a picture of Parks, the reserved seats poster features a QR code directing riders to adult, young adult, and children’s books about Parks in the public library. Lextran General Manager Carrie Butler said a similar event last year spurred reader interest.
“They were checking out books and reading them and coming back and asking questions so, that was part of the reason we wanted to continue it again is people were using the code and getting a book and just learning more,” said Butler.
Butler noted the location of the designated seat on each Lextran bus varies, but it’s typically toward the front of the vehicle. Parks passed away in 2005. She would have been 107 on her birthday Tuesday of this week.
