A Lexington city council member wants more information about how U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE works with the Fayette County jail. The matter has been sent to a committee for review.
Council Member Jennifer Reynolds said she had received some complaints from residents about how ICE was working with the jail. Reynolds added improvements have been made, but she still would like to examine the matter further. “I think it’s important to see how are we keeping track of people and how are we recording people, if they’re undocumented, or if they’re just foreign born and not even undocumented. I would like to know more about that process and what we are actually doing,” said Reynolds.
Vice Mayor Steve Kay said this is an issue the Lexington community would like to know more about. Council Member Fred Brown called it a “sensitive issue,” and one that might be better discussed in a closed door executive session. “This is something that is happening in a lot of cities that in my way of thinking is a way to shut down some ICE’s programs. And I don’t agree with that,” said Brown.
Reynolds doesn’t expect the ICE review to happen for several months because of other council business that has already been scheduled.
