A Lexington city council committee Tuesday moved forward a resolution seeking to boost solar energy use within the central Kentucky community. The solarizing Lexington program involves incentives to bolster solar paneling of homes.
Solar energy proponents appeared before the council’s environmental quality committee asking for its blessing to get the word out about ‘bulk buying’ discounts. Residential Engineer Specialist Rachel Norton says the aim is to attract 20 to 30 residents to move forward with solar paneling. She says it starts with contractors buying in bulk. “They get a good discount for bulk buying and scheduling and then they can also pass part of that discount, or all of it, depending upon the system that they use, they can pass a discount on to the customers as well,” said Norton
Norton says that can be 20 to 30 percent. Solar Energy Solutions Co-Owner Steve Ricketts says the upfront cost varies between $12,000 to $15,000, which can be recouped over ten to eleven years.
