The annual Fourth of July parade in Lexington this Wednesday will include a new feature. The eye-catching addition will be hard to miss, since it will be leading the procession.
Downtown Lexington Partnership Event Coordinator Laura Farnsworth says the big helium balloons are sure to draw attention. “It’s not characters. They’re patriotic; a rocket, a star and some really cool spheres that we think will let people know, alert them, ‘hey the parade’s coming.’ Sit up, get ready, it’s going to be a fun one,” said Farnsworth.
Also new this Fourth is the location for the annual fireworks display. The show in the sky will return to downtown, but this time the fireworks will be launched off the top of the Lexington Financial Center. Farnsworth says the building is tall enough to ensure there are no fire concerns from falling debris. “Then we’ll launch an additional hundred feet or so from there. So, your fallout zone is completely in the atmosphere. There’s no debris that should be anywhere near the local buildings around it or any guests standing on the ground, across the street or anything,” noted Farnsworth.
Lexington’s annual festival, which is expected to draw some 30,000 to 40,000 in all, kicks off with the annual Great American Pie Contest and Ice Cream Social at noon on Tuesday.
