Lexington New Circle Road Widening and Interchange Improvements Underway

Stu Johnson

Work is beginning this week on a road widening and interchange project along Lexington’s New Circle Road.  The project involves adding a lane in both directions from Georgetown Street to Boardwalk Avenue and reconstruction for a large portion of the Newtown Pike interchange.

Kentucky Department of Highways Spokeswoman Natasha Lacy says interchange work is aimed at making merging easier.  She says it may not mean a longer merge lane. “One of the ramps will be removed and there will be a change with the merging situation for the traffic,” said Lacy.  “I can’t necessarily say it will be longer, but it will be just some improvements will be made.”

The $41.7 million project also calls for the construction of a new roundabout in front of LexMark’s main entrance.    Lacy says the flow of traffic during construction will eventually be greatly restricted.  “So, at this time we’re doing alternative lane closures, and we’re just closing one lane.  As we move along with the project, of course, things change. And it could be that the public will need to use alternate routes,” noted Lacy.

The anticipated completion date for the entire project is the end of 2020.
