Lexington Council Approves New Cable Franchise

Lexington’s council has given final approval to a new ten year utility franchise.  Last night’s action paves the way for MetroNet to begin work on a high speed fiber optic network in the Fayette County community.

Council Member Richard Moloney expressed concerns about excavation practices with such a project.  He worried accurate information about existing underground utilities may not be available.  City Chief Information Officer Aldona Valicenti says these issues have been discussed. “When you start a large construction project, you want to have tools in place, that maybe can bore a little hole, take a look at what is down there.  Is it accurate?  So, some of it depends on the age of the infrastructure that is already there,” said Valicenti.

MetroNet is investing $70 million to construct fiber cable for Lexington neighborhoods and commercial businesses.  Company Vice President John Campbell says design work will begin in January.

Valicenti says residents might be able to start signing up for MetroNet service in six to seven months.
