Lexington Pilot Project Focuses on Park Cameras

kentucky.com

Members of a Lexington Council committee are suggesting a pilot camera program for a neighborhood park.

General Government and Social Services Committee members voted 8 to 1 to spend $30,000 for four high resolution cameras to be located in Berry Hill Park on Lexington's South Side.  They are being proposed as a tool to help ensure a safer park environment.

Dean Marcum of the Public Safety Department says the cameras would be in vandal-proof enclosures.  “It’s high enough up on the pole that nobody’s gonna be able to climb up on the pole and get it,” Marcum told committee members, although the cameras will not be bullet-proof.

The lone committee "no" vote came from Council Member Angela Evans who expressed concerns about privacy.  Calling the move a "slippery slope," Evans said a specific crime problem in the park has not been identified.

Some committee members wanted to see mobile cameras that could be moved from one park to another.  The issue now goes to the full council.  ?
