An accident has seriously damaged the pedestrian walkway over Lancaster Ave on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University.

The incident, which occurred around noon Friday has shut down Lancaster between Barnes Mill Rd and Crabbe St. University officials say there were no injuries but the roadway is expected to remain closed for an extended period of time.

Brian Makinen, EKU's Director of Safety says it's hard to know when the area will reopen to vehicles and pedestrians, “We’re gonna wait for the engineers and bridge inspectors to dictate the appropriate plan of action for safely addressing the structure and rendering it safe moving forward.  We won’t allow vehicles or people in this area until such time it is completely safe for individuals to be around it.”

The pedway, which is less than four years old was constructed to connect parking lots and an apartment complex to campus.
