As part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a Kentucky advocacy agency is launching a social media campaign to educate the community on intimate partner abuse.
Each day for the first 17 days of the month Greenhouse 17 will share one way to combat abuse.
Executive Director Darlene Thomas says the campaign is not just about sharing posts on Facebook and Twitter. She says the movement is about community and each individual within it.
“All of us play a role, big or small, that sends very clear messages that survivors deserved not to be harmed," says Thomas. "And that those who do the harm are going to be held accountable.”
Thomas says the "17 Days-17 Ways" campaign will include steps to help people take action against intimate partner abuse. Topics include how to respond if a loved one is being harmed and speaking up when someone is victim-blaming.
“So we’re not just saying take a stand," Thomas adds. "We’re going to give you 17 ways to do it with information that can help you support and give you the tools to take the action.”
Greenhouse 17 is located in Fayette County and shelters approximately 300 adults and children each year. The agency’s service region is made up of 17 counties: Anderson, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Estill, Fayette, Franklin, Garrard, Harrison, Jessamine, Lincoln, Madison, Mercer, Nicholas, Powell, Scott, and Woodford County.
