Downtown Lexington's Fourth of July Festival is one of the community's biggest celebrations. Festival officials say residents can expect the traditional attractions with few changes.

The festival activities will kick off with something as American as apple pie. In fact, it is the apple pie contest Thursday downtown. The week will end with the annual Bluegrass 10,000 race, the parade, and fireworks. Festival Committee Chair Donna Moloney is anticipating a big crowd on a Saturday fourth. "I don't think numbers will diminish because the fourth falls on a Saturday," said Moloney. "In fact, I think they'll increase. I hope so because it's such a fun day downtown."
Returning this year is the Lexington Philharmonic for the Friday night patriotic concert. "I'm an army brat so I love Washington post marches and the patriotic music, the military songs, a salute to our armed forces," added Moloney.
Moloney says few changes overall have been made to the festival format. "As much as tradition holds true for the Fourth of July, so does it in Lexington," she says. "This year we haven't veered too far left or right. It's basically what it's been in the past."
And what it's been in the past is all kinds of music including a night of patriotic songs, arts and crafts, food, and a mid-day parade.
Moloney is hoping for a repeat when it comes to weather for July Fourth. She says last year's weather was absolutely perfect. ?
