Lexington Council Acting on Downtown Design Standards

fayettealliance.com

Lexington city leaders continue to consider ways of bringing building design consistency to the core of the city's downtown.  The effort is outlined in what's being called a "design

excellence" initiative.  Council members voted to put the matter on the docket today Tuesday, but opted not to fund a new position to facilitate infill development activities.

Planning Commissioner Derek Paulsen doesn't view that vote as slowing the program consideration. "It's not just gonna start July one.  We have a lot of things to do including hiring the design officer, getting that current position created and get that up and running," said Paulsen.

Council member Richard Moloney still has questions related to incentives for design standards.  "The incentives is what I have a problem.  I haven't seen where everybody is on board for incentives toward people if they do follow the guidelines.  I haven't seen what those awards are," said Moloney.

Final budget decisions are expected later this month.?
