Lextran Eyeing Fare Structure, Route Frequency

lexingtonky.gov

Lexington city leaders are continuing efforts to boost ridership on Fayette County's mass transit system. New General Manager Carrie Butler says Lextran expects to welcome its five millionth customer next year. Butler addressed council last week.    "We really would like to improve our travel time down some of the major corridors," said Butler. "That will allow us to operate our vehicles at the same level, but have them travel down the roadways faster."

Butler said bus fares have not been raised for several years.  While the issue is now being investigated, she said there is no formal proposal at this point.  "Right now we are not moving forward with any community engagement or making any public changes, but we have been looking at that since our fare structure has remained relatively steady since 1991 and 2001," added Butler

Butler says Lextran currently has 55 buses, including four hybrid vehicles.  She says there are plans to purchase five electric buses.  Council meets Tuesday and is expected to consider budget reports from subcommittees in a number of areas. ?
