Some Lexington area residents were hit twice this week by power outages. Electricity was interrupted for about an hour and a half Friday morning in parts of downtown, the University of Kentucky and portions of Nicholasville Road.
Kentucky Utilities Cliff Feltham says the blackouts could be the lingering effects of a storm earlier in the week. "Now, we're gonna spend probably the rest of the afternoon checking to see what's up with the switches and if, in fact, the lightning strike that hit in that area on Tuesday evening had an effect to this switch. But it just didn't go off Tuesday evening when everything else did," said Feltham.
Feltham says Tuesday's power outage impacted 28,000 customers. The interruption Friday morning left about 3,200 in the dark. Feltham says the threat of power loss is coming a little later in the year than normal. "This is a stretch of weather that we normally would have had in June or July, but we get it here in August, where afternoon storms come in and they bring with them lightning and thunder and the possibilities of winds that may blow tree branches down or full trees. We've had some of that this summer," added Feltham.
Feltham says the blackout Friday morning originated near the same electrical substation where a problem occurred earlier in the week. ?
