Lexington Leaders Consider Veterans Commission

Lexington council members are considering establishing a local commission for veterans’ services.

Members of the General Government and Social Services Committee heard from state veterans affairs officials Tuesday.

Council member James Brown says a local commission could help with coordination.

“If we can form a commission and make sure we identify what organizations need to be part of the conversation, which is all of the veterans’ organizations, we can see what we can do to help broaden the services that the city provides to our veterans,” said Brown.

Council member Richard Moloney sees a need for a separate housing facility for homeless veterans.

“I think we should have a permanent housing, somewhere for homelessness.  And I think this commission, we need to work to find that permanently,” noted Moloney.  “The Hope Center is a big help.  They deal with the drugs and all that.  I commend that.  It’s just what happens after that.”

There are also plans to re-establish a veterans’ parade to take place this November.
