Lexington Group Sends Care Packages To Troops

The Lexington based non-profit Military Missions this year is sending out about the same number of care packages as last holiday season.  More than 500 packages have already gone out to military men and women stationed all over the globe.  Volunteer Royce Hall says the need to show care and concern never goes away.  “There may not be as much ground fighting, direct ground fighting as we have had in the past but we still have many many troops overseas that are in places where they’re constantly on alert,” said Hall.

Hall says contributions have come from all but one state in the U.S.  She says the response for requested items is always overwhelming.  “If we put out a call that we need some particular thing, it just comes in by the hundreds,” explained Hall.  “People are just so generous and so good to our troops that way.”

The packages are filled with personal care items, snacks, candy, socks, canned meats, and cards.  Hall says cards from children are especially cherished.  “The most precious to all of them are the children’s cards," she said. "When they get a card from a kid that basically can’t do much more than scribble or draw a little picture or whatever, they love that little piece of home.  It reminds them of what they are fighting for.”

The Military Missions volunteer says some 5,000 to 6,000 packages are sent out over a year’s time
